Study Before Investing

With eTrade and ScotTrade and other similar sites being so easy to use, it has become quite normal for people to make their own investment decisions, doing everything on their own. While this enables a trader to earn profits without sharing a percentage, it also leaves the investor with no one to blame for losses but their own self. Too many people make the mistake of jumping into new investments without doing adequate research (or without doing any research at all!). As is the case with anything you plan to take seriously, you have to research seriously before you can be successful; in fact, the research for investing is of the utmost importance, as you are playing with your financial future!

One of the first things for you to recognize is that investing is not as easy as picking a stock that is doing well and investing. If it were that easy, anyone would be able to make money in the stock market, as this would require no skill at all! Instead, the key is systematic research; it is important to keep in mind that the fluctuations of the stock market are largely dependent upon the fact that people are reactionary. Most solo investors tend to invest in stocks when they are near their peak and sell when they are near the bottom, due to their reactionary nature.

If you want to be a wise investor, there are a lot of resources you can tap into to learn. Of course, the premier daily periodical for investing is the “Wall Street Journal,” but this is not the only place you should turn to. By subscribing to such magazines as “Fortune” and “Money” you will learn a lot that will be beneficial to you in your future investments; you can also look into any number of great investing books, ranging from classic gems such as Benjamin Graham’s “The Intelligent Investor” to more recent classics such as Warren Buffett’s “The Essays of Warren Buffett.” You should also take some time wearing The Glasses of Warren Buffett, which will help you see investing in the same way he sees it.

After you pick a few resources that seem right for you – making sure that these resources are well-respected and will lead you in the right direction – you will be ready to study, and study, and study!
